IN THE END, SULLY GOT HIS WAY. OFELIA wasn’t all that surprised that Bernie ultimately capitulated — the older man didn’t have it in his heart to crush the younger man — but she expected the argument to go on longer. Bernie only lasted for five minutes until he caved.

“It’s not that bad,” Ofelia reassured him as she helped him roll out his sleeping bag in the same spot he’d slept only two weeks before when he’d been recovering from a previous attack. “You’ll have access to food, drinks, and a shower. How can you possibly complain about that?”

“I’ll also have you and that detective you refuse to dump breathing down my neck,” Bernie barked. “You know I hate that.”

“That detective I refuse to dump?” Ofelia couldn’t contain her laughter. “You must be really mad if you refuse to say his name.”

“Oh, I’m really mad. I’m so mad I might never talk to either of you again.”

“Well, that will make me sad.” Ofelia gave his shoulder a squeeze and then regarded him with solemn eyes. “We only want you here because we love you. I know it’s difficult for you, but I would like you to give serious thought to how Sully would feel if something happened to you. He would be crushed. Do you want to see him crushed?”

“Oh, you’re so manipulative,” Bernie groused. “You’re just trying to pull on my heartstrings to get your way.”

“You’re right.” Ofelia saw no point in denying it. “I want you safe for Sully and myself. We don’t know what we’re dealing with here. It’s best if we don’t have to worry about you. Does that make me selfish? I guess. We’re both struggling, though. It would be helpful if you would stay here and not put up a fuss, as a favor to us.”

“Oh, geez.” Bernie pinched the bridge of his nose and looked to the sky. “This isn’t going to work out well for me. You know that, right? I’m going to turn into some pampered princess. On the street, you can’t lose your edge. I’m going to be in big trouble when I go back. There’s no way to maintain an edge here. It’s too … cushy.”

“Is that what you’re worried about?” Ofelia was honestly curious. “Do you think the other guys on the street are going to make fun of you for going soft?”

“I think they’re going to try to take advantage of me and steal my stuff.”

“Yeah, that’s not going to happen.” Ofelia was firm on that. “I’ll make sure that you keep your stuff. Does that make you feel better?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because ... I don’t need to be protected by a girl. That’s just undignified.”

Ofelia made a face. “Well, I’m sorry you think that’s undignified. However, there’s not much I can do about that right this second. I need you to agree to stay here without complaint, though. It’s important.”

“For how long?”

“At least a few days.”

“I need a schedule to work with. I do much better with a schedule.
